Koi & Hyungmee Shin
The exhibition ‘Meet There’, is connected to the “A South-Facing House, Again” exhibition that took place last year. In preparation for the exhibition, two artists, Koi and Hyungmee Shin, frequently visited several places adjacent to North Korea in search of “something” that traverses between the two Koreas. During the trips, what resonated the most in our minds was ‘Lines’. Countless lines…
Through art pieces, we hoped to express the abstract and symbolic lines, not just the 38th Parallel that separates the north and south. Lines with various meanings had become engraved in our hearts while looking at... Lines of wheels on vehicles that traveled the south and north parked in the empty parking lot at Kaesong Industrial Complex; Lines of the DMZ steel fences that stop our steps from moving forward; Lines of the peaceful horizon overlooking the land; and Lines of the sea horizon overlooking Hwajinpo beach. The line in Koi’s mind, hoping to connect and draw a straight line in her life; The lines of communications in various shapes spreading across the Korean peninsula, imagining and longing for someday; The lines in the minds of those who have lost and defected from their hometown; and The lines of our shining and busy minds for our unification. This is how our exhibition started with “line”: In our exhibition, we wanted to illustrate through a number of expanded lines in our paintings, the communication and harmony which can overcome the limitations that are blocking unification.
